Why petitions matter

Every signature counts. Paper petitions are a powerful way to show our elected representatives that Victorians — not just Sunbury locals — are united against toxic waste incineration. These petitions will be formally tabled in the Victorian Parliament, creating a public record that decision-makers can’t ignore.

Why we have two petitions — and why you should sign both

There are two important petitions — one focused on Sunbury and one that covers the whole state of Victoria.

Signing both sends the strongest possible message:

The Sunbury petition shows how deeply this project is opposed by people in the local area directly affected.

The Victoria-wide petition shows that communities across the state reject waste incineration everywhere, not just in Sunbury.

Together, these petitions demonstrate local resistance and statewide solidarity — proving that Victorians want cleaner, safer, and fairer waste solutions.

🏠 Sunbury Petition

This petition focuses specifically on the HiQ waste-to-energy incinerator proposed for 570 Sunbury Road, Bulla.

It calls on the Minister for Planning to immediately halt any approval or progress toward building the facility until the current Parliamentary inquiry into Waste-to-Energy is complete.

It highlights local risks: 700+ extra trucks daily, air-pollution hazards, biodiversity loss along Deep Creek and Emu Creek, and HiQ’s previous EPA compliance breaches.

🌏 Victoria-wide Petition

This broader petition calls for a statewide moratorium on all waste-to-energy incinerator projects in Victoria — not just Sunbury.

It highlights scientific evidence that incinerators release toxic air pollution, microplastics, dioxins, PFAS, and greenhouse gases, while locking councils into expensive, long-term contracts that undermine recycling and circular-economy goals.

The petition urges Parliament to pass legislation prohibiting waste incineration anywhere in the state and to invest instead in safer, sustainable waste solutions.
